Shooting Woes Lead to RedHawks Downfall.

In the second game of our doubleheader, the Varsity teams took to the hardwood in a non-league game. Lakeland came in with a 6-5 record from the Lakes Valley Conference and in 4th place in their league while the RedHawks were 9-2 and tied for 1st place in their league. But that did not deter the Eagles from traveling 45 minutes and 30 miles in the fridged temperatures to face the RedHawks on their home court. The game started out slowly by both teams as Lakeland took a 7-6 lead after 1 quarter. Freshman Gabby Bieniek had 4 points in the quarter to keep the RedHawks close. The 2nd quarter started on an uptick for the Lady RedHawks as Kata Tasich got a steal and a bucket to give our ladies their 1st lead of 8-7 since the opening minute of the game and Freshman Hailey Fellin followed that up with a bucket for a 10-7 lead. That lead was short lived as the RedHawks went ice cold and the Eagles went on a 7-0 run to take a 14-10 lead into halftime. The 3rd quarter saw a bit more offense as the Eagles went on a 6-2 run early to extend their lead to 20-12. Kata hits 2 triples and Gabby hits two free throws to pull within 4 points 23-19, but the Eagles scored 4 straight points to take a 27-20 lead going into the 4th quarter and the RedHawks could get no closer. The 4th quarter saw the Eagles extend their lead by outscoring the RedHawks 8-2 to win the game by the score of 35-22. As cold as it was outside, the Lady RedHawks were even colder throughout the game by going 8-46 from the field and just 2-8 from the free throw line. This cold shooting led to their 3rd loss of the year against 9 wins. Kata Tasich (10 points), Gabby Bieniek (6 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals & 1 block) and Kaitlyn Piggott (4 points, 9 boards & 3 blocks) led the Lady RedHawks. Annabelle Beaubien (5 boards, 1 steal & 1 block) and Katie Malone (3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal & 1 block) also contributed for the RedHawks. The ladies travel to Troy High on Thursday for a 7:00 tipoff against the Colts. The winner of this game will take the early lead in the OAA Conference race and stay undefeated in the league. Keep working hard ladies and keep believing in yourselves.
