It's not unusual in the NBA to play back-to-back games or 3 games in 4 nights, but this is not the NBA. This is JV High School basketball and with a cancellation of a game our Lady RedHawks had to play that type of schedule. The ladies traveled to Rochester Adams on Friday to face the Highlanders in a conference game after a big win the night before against their archrivals. Both teams came out a bit sluggish struggling to get any kind of offensive rhythm, but Adams was able to take the lead after 1-quarter by the score of 9-8. Sienna Young tried to spark the RedHawks as she tallied 4 points & 3 boards to keep the RedHawks close. The second quarter was more about the Athens defense as they were able to clamp down and outscore the Highlanders 10-5 to take an 18-14 lead into the half. Ella Odgers had 4 points & Madhu Battula had 3 to pace the RedHawks in the quarter. Again, in the 3rd the Lady RedHawk's defense clamped down on the home team and outscored them 10-5 again to extend their lead heading into the 4th quarter by the score of 28-19. Sienna Young (5 points & 4 boards) and Madelyn Odgers (4 points & 3 boards) helped to increase the RedHawks lead. Both teams had difficulty scoring in the 4th, but the RedHawks tied the quarter at 8 points apiece to win the game 36-27 with the help of Sophia Alexander's 6 points. The RedHawks struggled to score but relied heavily on their defense and rebounding to take the win. Guard Faith Cotton said, "after an eventful game @ Troy last night, we came out with less enthusiasm and after a tight 1st half, we picked up the pace defensively and started to communicate with each other better that led us to a better 2nd half and the win." Sienna Young (11 points, 9 rebounds & 2 assists) and Sophia Alexander, who played her 1st full game with our ladies had (8 points, 1 steal, 1 rebound & 1 assist). Other key contributors were the Odgers sisters, Madelyn (6 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist & 2 blocks) and Ella (5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists & 1 steal). Ella also received praise towards the end of the game from one of the officials praising her leadership towards her teammates and her politeness towards the officiating crew. A special honor that I haven't seen to many times during a game. Outstanding job Ella! One final key contributor was Madhu Battula, who from the point guard position had (3 points, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 5 assists & a team high 5 blocks), way to go Madhu. The win raised the Lady RedHawks record to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the conference. The ladies are back at it again on Tuesday against Harper Woods at home @ 5:30. Again, they will be playing 3 games in 4 nights and finish with this same Rochester Adams team @ home on Friday. Way to stay strong ladies and plug away. Keep up the good work.
