Three games in 4 nights, back-to-back games, this is something you see in the NBA not in high school basketball. But that is the situation our Varsity Lady RedHawks Basketball Team was in on Friday @ Rochester Adams. After coming off a huge win at archrival Troy the night before, our ladies were tasked with facing a senior laden team on their home court who also is in contention for the league title. A daunting task for any team especially for our shorthanded RedHawks. Adams opens up the scoring up with 4 straight points, but the RedHawks came back as both teams traded baskets until Kata Tasich hits a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 11-7. From there it was all Highlanders, as the home team went on a 11-0 run to finish the quarter with a 22-7 lead. Senior guard Katie Malone scored all 7 Athens points in the quarter to try and keep the game within reach. The second quarter the RedHawks started to find their range as Senior guard Kata Tasich starts the run with a triple and then is fouled on a 3-point shot that led to a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 24-20. The RedHawks were back in the game. Rochester Adams scores 5 straight points, but the Lady RedHawks finish the quarter on a 5-3 spurt to cut the halftime lead down to 34-25 for the Highlanders. After a few adjustments by the RedHawks their defense picked up holding the home team to just 3 points while scoring 10 to cut the lead down to 37-35 entering the 4th quarter. The momentum was on the side of the RedHawks after a slow start to the game. Our ladies opened the 4th by tying the game with 2 free throws by Laityn Dennis. From there the RedHawks outscored the Highlanders 5-4 to take their 1st lead of the game 42-41 with 4 minutes to go. The next 4 minutes saw the home team outscore our ladies 8-4 to pull out the win by the score of 50-46. A valiant effort and comeback by the Lady RedHawks, but they couldn't hold their late lead. The RedHawks were led by an outstanding game by Katie Malone (21 points, 3 rebounds, 2steals & 1 assist). Kata Tasich (13 points, 4 rebounds & 2 assists) and Laityn Dennis (6 points, 4 rebounds & 1 assist) were the other key contributors. Annabelle Beaubien contributed (7 rebounds & 1 assist) & Gabby Bieniek had (5 steals & 3 rebounds). The loss dropped the ladies overall record to 10-4 & 3-1 in the league, a half-game behind Rochester Adams who they face @ home on Friday for a 7:00 tipoff. Great effort ladies and keep working hard.
