The Lady Redhawks followed the same formula that worked so well in their game against Troy High and rode the momentum of a dominant first quarter to a 52 – 8 win. Athens led 20 – 0 after eight minutes with Sophia Alexander again leading the way (two 3’s, one lay up, 2 for 2 from the line for 10 points.) Eight players ended up scoring for the Redhawks: Sophia led with 16; Bree Rota, Emily Cousino, Arianna Saracevic, and Gia Leong had 6 each; Mallory Cousino, Charlotte Riffe, and Carmen Cavataio had 4 each. The game was marred by some rough Harper Woods fouls, including three technicals. Gia summed up the philosophy that she and her teammates followed. “I just remind myself next point, next play. It’s just basketball.” Mallory agreed, “I feel like we didn’t let all the other factors that were going on around us get into our heads. I thought we overall did a great job of handling the basketball. Especially Carmen, I thought she had a really good game, finding ways of getting past the defense and attack the basket.” In regard to another strong defensive effort, Gia said, “I feel like we’re very disciplined as a defensive team. Protect the paint is one of the big rules.” And when asked to single out a teammate for a particularly good game, she said, “Bree, for sure. She had a lot of steals, and she had a lot of fast breaks, but most importantly, she passed smart.” Mallory agreed with the choice, “I liked the play when she crossed up a girl and attacked the basket for a lay up.”
