The Lady Redhawks faced off against a resilient and disciplined Brighton team in an evenly matched game that was decided in the middle. Athens led by one at the end of the first quarter 9 – 8, fell behind to 22 – 15 at the end of the second quarter, roared back in the third quarter (always the most important quarter) to take a take 32 – 25 lead, and then the two teams traded blows in a stalemate fourth quarter to give Athens the win 37 – 30. A quality win that was important for the team’s development. Sophia Alexander led with 12 points, Arianna Saracevic had 10, Carmen Cavataio 6, and Charlotte Riffe, Emily Cousino, and Gia Leong had 3 each. Every point and every good defensive stand was needed for the win. Irsa Folla, currently out for an injury but supporting the team from the bench, explained the turning point. “It was more competition than usual. . . we’re usually winning by a lot, and this time we were down by a lot. The half time break brought us back together.” Carmen agreed, “After half time we took a deep breath and just focused.” Irsa complimented the overall play of Emily who had a strong game both offensively and defensively with the addition of some timely shot blocking. “She was constantly making plays.” Carmen added props for Sophia, “Sophia had some great shots, a three in a game like that really makes a difference.”
